I also went back to Brock University for the 2020 Winter Mainstage to play
Maximillius, Time, and the Bear
in an adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale,
Perdita: Or The Winter's Tale
As Tethered the Ghost, my art-ner, Kaylyn Valdez-Scott, and I continue to develop our first project, Healing Thread. This play means so much to us as it tackles themes and topics around what it means to be first- and second-generation Filipin- immigrants in Canada. The project began through the NEST Residency program with Suitcase in Point, and in January 2020 we presented a 25-minute workshop production of Healing Thread to a small audience in St. Catharines. A full-length production of the play was scheduled to be presented at In The Soil 2020, an annual multi-disciplinary arts festival in St. Catharines produced by Suitcase in Point. Due to the unprecedented crisis around COVID-19, In The Soil 2020 had been re-imagined, and other festivals we were scheduled to perform in have been postponed.

But don't fret! In September 2021, we performed an outdoor show of Healing Thread (minus the singing and dancing... I know) at the In The Soil Multi-Arts Festival. In 2022, we were awarded a Research and Creation grant by the Canada Council for the Arts, and we used this opportunity to go into full playwright mode. In August 2023, we held a week-long workshop at Theatre Aquarius in collaboration with Karen Ancheta, who did dramaturgy and direction for our play. We also were able to work with the wonderful actors Carolyn Fe, Aura Carcueva, and Ericka Leobrera to bring our characters Sampaguita, Angie, and Jasmine to life in front of our eyes. We feel so grateful for this opportunity alone, but we also got to share two play readings with this incredible group of people by our sides: one in Hamilton and one in Toronto.

Forging ahead, we look forward to developing Healing Thread into the epic 😉 it deserves to be.
